Being a dad comes with a unique set of challenges—balancing work, parenting, and your own well-being is no small feat. And when kids are having an emotional meltdown, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and unsure of how to help them manage their emotions.
But what if there was a simple, effective way to help your kids through these tough moments while also relieving your own stress? Enter yoga. No, it’s not about fancy poses or long meditations. It’s about using simple, accessible tools to calm the mind and body—and breathwork is one of the best places to start.
Why Breathwork?
Breathwork is a foundational part of yoga that’s incredibly effective at regulating emotions. It works by activating the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps calm the body and mind. For kids, who are still learning how to handle big emotions like anger or frustration, a playful approach to breathwork can make all the difference.
A Simple Breathwork Technique for Dads and Kids
Here’s a practice you can use the next time your child feels angry or upset (and when you feel stressed yourself):
1. Stand or sit with your feet about hip-width apart. Make sure you’re both in a stable, comfortable position.
2. Take a deep breath in through your nose. Encourage your child to do the same.
3. Exhale through your mouth, like you’re blowing out a candle. Make it fun by pretending there’s an invisible candle to blow out. Move your hand around—high, low, far away—so your child has to chase the candle with their breath.
This playful element not only makes the practice more engaging for kids but also helps them connect with their body and emotions in a safe way.
Why It Works
This exercise helps your child focus on their breath, which naturally slows the heart rate and reduces the physical symptoms of anger or frustration. It also gives you both a moment to pause and reset, creating a space where you can respond to the situation calmly rather than react impulsively.
And let’s be real: As a dad, it’s not just your kids who need to calm down. This practice is just as helpful for you in those stressful parenting moments, allowing you to approach each challenge with more patience and clarity.
Yoga as a Bonding Tool
Beyond the immediate stress relief, incorporating yoga and breathwork into your daily routine with your kids can be a powerful bonding tool. You’re not only teaching them valuable emotional skills but also creating moments of connection and playfulness that strengthen your relationship.
Give this practice a try the next time you and your kids face a tough moment. You might be surprised at how such a simple tool can bring a sense of calm and connection to your family.
